Back from a Field Collection at Lake Michigan

July 18, 2022 – We have returned from a data collection effort on the eastern coast of Lake Michigan, where we collected overwater RF propagation data as a part of our Fata Morgana program. Thank you to U.S. Coast Guard Frankfort and Captain Matt for assisting us in our successful field collection. A preliminary assessment of the data suggests we captured the desired phenomenology – the effect of evaporation ducts on RF propagation. In short, the refractivity allows the signal to travel much farther than one might expect in a free space atmosphere, well beyond the radio horizon. We are excited to dig into the data, achieve related processing goals, and eventually publish our results!
